If there’s one thing I hate.
It’s burglars. Those goddamned burgers. Lost my old laptop to those cocksuckers after one of them smashed my bedroom window and snatched it from the table.
Ever since then I’ve been super paranoid regarding what goes bump outside my home in the middle of the night. Heck, I even go so far as to reposition the furniture in the house to make the valuables hard to see from the outside but I can only go so far relying on the “inside view” of the house.
So occasionally I take a stroll around the house at night peeking through the windows with the concentration of a pervert peeking into the ladies bathroom ( without the creepiness of course. I’m crazy but I’m not stupid ). Why do I peek into my own home even though I already know where everything is?
Because I want to see what it look like from the outside.
I need to see how a burglar would see my fort if he was to try invading it. And to do this I have to “become a burglar” and walk in the footstep of a thief.
And it always stuns me just how I can improve my home defenses to make it harder to see the important stuff.
But this tactic of looking “looking from the outside” isn’t just for paranoid home defenders.
It also works in the editing phase of crafting copy. Here’s what I mean:
Even if you’re the one who wrote the copy in the end you’re not the one whose going to read it. Because of that you’re going to have a hard time feeling the emotional impact of the copy if you try reading it after spending hours working on it.
Being on the “inside” of your copy breeds familiarity.
Familiarity breeds incompetent editing. And incompetent editing breeds shit copy.
So take some time off from your copy. Give your brain sometime to “reset” so you can look at what you’ve written “from the outside”. And fell some of the feelz, emotions and questions your prospects will go through while reading it.
That’s all for today.
