If you’re a coach/ instructor or trying to position yourself as an expert then this is one of the most important messages you’re going to read. Stick with me, I’ll make it worth your while. So…
Had a bit of shock the other day.
My lil brother Francis came to me and asked me how to use a computer.
Now don’t get the wrong idea here, he didn’t mean teach him how to use a computer from the ground up. He already knew how to do the usual stuff, such as watching a movie, typing his assignments and Googling video game cheat codes.
Instead what he wanted was for me to teach him the advanced stuff about owning a computer such as the maintenance stuff.
Personally I was flat out shocked that he didn’t know this stuff.
I mean really…
He lived with me for crying out loud. Not tooting my horn here but I’m the bastard most people see as the “resident IT guy”. Though…
Truth be told I’ve become so used to being a computing power user that I basically assume that everyone around me knows the hardcore advanced shit I take for granted.
So it comes as a total kick in the gonads when someone actually admits they don’t.
And here’s where it gets interesting. There’s actually a name for this the brainiacs coined. They call it the “curse of knowledge” and it’s a real bitch when you’re trying to educate your email list and followers. Why?
Because you could end up talking about an advanced concept completely forgetting how your audience doesn’t know half of what you know. So they don’t have a good foundation to learn what you’re trying to teach them and in the end they end up learning nothing.
In fact they’ll see you as a stuck up show off who loves bragging about what you know to them.
Moral of this story?
Keep an eye out to make sure you’re not inflicted by the curse of knowledge.
Anyways, if you want me to cook up emails which connect you to your list without making you seem like a stuck up snob who enjoys showing off how smart you are to your less experienced list, then contact me on the link below:
