[ The negotiation techniques of a “marketing genius” cop ]
A couple of months ago, an autistic suicidal teenager ran out in the middle of class.
The school called the cops to look for him. A suicidal teen is far too unstable to take any chances with.
Now, here’s where the magic happens
What do you think happened when one of the officers found the boy? The officer, as a figure of authority had plenty of options to pick from…
Did he order him back to class in a bossy tone?
Did he look down upon the child like an angered adult. And yell at him for wasting everyone’s damn time?
Did he threaten the boy with a harsh punishment if he did not follow his orders?
Well, the answer to all the above is… no.
Instead the cop walked to where the boy sat sobbing. Then, he brought himself down to the young boy’s level by sitting down on the dirty pavement with him.
It gets even better.
The officer then looks the boy in the eyes and calms him down ( a common anti suicide negotiation tactic ). Then they talked about stuff they had in common. Building a connection.
Forging two of the most important foundations in any relationship…
Trust. And empathy.
And it’s trust, which gives your customers the confidence to believe what you have to say about your product.
Right now your customers want a solution
They have a problem, and they want it fixed. And in most cases, they’re going to buy from whoever they feel understands them most.
Now, it’s easier to convert a hooker into a housewife, than it is to build a sense of empathy with a customer while seated on your high horse. Looking down on them.
You have to bring yourself down to their level. And look them in the eye, without killing your vibe of authority.
Email marketing is one of the most effective strategies to use when you’re building a relationship with your customer. Like an old friend, you’ll appear in their inboxes and they’ll sit down to hear what you’ve been up to.
They’ll even go as far as looking for you if you go missing or don’t show up.
Now that’s commitment.
