I’m listening to Enya as I write this. So my mood for this post is a bit moar sombre that usual. Now, let’s get started, ahem…
What IS success?
Can you define it?
YEEEEAAAAHHHH…Got you thinking didn’t I?
Not so easy isn’t it?
Success and it’s various denitions are one of the most subjective topics of all time.
One man’s definition of success might involve a house full of hot Thai hookers and snorting mountains of coccaine, while another man’s definition of success might involve a house in a quite neighborhood with reasonable financial security.
Now, let me explain why I’m bringing this topic up all of a sudden. You see…
A week ago on Ye Olde’ Facebook someone igninted an unholy flame war in a group I’m in about how successful some of the legends in our line of work are ( or where ). He reasoned that Gary Halbert didn’t have a giant mansion of fleet of Roll’s Royces so there was no way he could’ve been successful.
However the more mature and experienced members of the group then pointed out how the definition of success depends on the person in question.
And I fully agreed with them.
Heck, my personal idea of what success is involves having a bed, a table, an giant TV, a Playstation 4 with a subscription to Crunchyroll, a couch, a strong internet connection and a laptop computer and financial security from owning my own business.
I just want to play videogames in my spare time when I’m not working.
Everything else is just a bonus.
Heck, for the most part my idea of success is Spartan to most people. Yet far as I’m concerned I don’t need that much in terms of material possessions to be happy.
As the great David X says:
Nobody should tell you what you want. What you want is what you want, but what you want can also change at any time
And, more importantly:
You cannot let anyone tell you what you’re supposed to want. If you’re a soldier and you kill someone and your side wins, you’re hero. But if your side loses you’re a war criminal.
So, don’t let anyone judge you for what you want.
And don’t let anyone dictate what success is supposed to be to you. That includes me.
You idea of what success is is nobody’s concern. So don’t let them, or society dictate how you’re supposed to be happy. Oh, and don’t be a giant douche either.
…Till the next wave of madness… Vae Victis…
