Did you know Leonardo DaVinci and Michaelangelo understood a “hidden” concept of writing killer copy?
Here’s what I mean…
As some of you already know I’m an artist ( It’s right there in the damn website header dammit ).
Back in 2009 when I was levelling up my art skills for my comic books, one of the most important things I learned was to master the rules of drawing the human body.
Getting the proportions right.
Making sure all the poses and movements look and feel natural.
Us humans can subconsciously pick up the smallest mistakes in drawing. We don’t always know what’s wrong with it but it just rubs off on us the wrong way.
This is why the great artists like Leonardo and Michaelangelo spent years studying the human body. This gave us the spine chillingly detailed pieces like the Mona Lisa and David which still puzzle researchers today ( Though I argue Mona could be smiling because she won the lottery and David was some random streaker who lost a bet and had to be immortalised as a statue… ).
Moving on, the reason I had to learn the rules was because the final art style I wanted to master was a stylised way to draw the human figure.
It needed me to warp a few rules
However, before I could break the rules, I had to know them first.
Couldn’t skip this part ( I should know. I tried ).
Trying to draw stylised figures without mastering basic anatomy was like trying to build a house without a foundation. Of course it’s possible but don’t expect anyone in his right mind to try stepping into the death trap.
The same thing applies to writing copy.
There are a few hard set rules to direct response copy
Such as making sure you have your prospect’s attention before you start your pitch and asking for the order.
Plenty of copywriting formulas and strategies have popped over the years. But all of them ( well, the most effective ones ) are based on the proven rules of salesmanship.
Warping them where needed, but acknowledging their existence instead of completely ignoring them.
That’s how ideas are born.
And that’s how we move forward.
That is the hallmark of progress!!! ( You know I’m serious when I use three exclamation marks )
Think of it as a more twisted way of standing over the shoulders of giants to look further into your neighbour’s garden.
It’s no different to how I use the most powerful and proven copywriting strategies when I come up with my own ideas.
I’m not going to try reinventing the wheel and make up a whole new formula. But I am going to warp the rules made the legends to make them work for your market and make you huge steaming wads of moolah.
