A few hours ago our friends dropped by for an afternoon of videogames. One of them came with his cousin.
A girl ( I like her. She’s generous enough to buy me fried chicken and a cool cider ).
Unfortunately she isn’t used to the intense violence modern video games have to offer. In fact, she spent the first half hour watching us while curled up in a ball and screaming every five minutes…
Y’know. The “typical” reaction.
Aside from her occasional grossed out screams she started getting more and more comfortable with what she saw.
Now she doesn’t mind the violence that much. In fact, she’s actually commenting on how “tame” it now seems. Amazing, isn’t it?
Something that has a POWERFUL emotional effect at first seems to lose it’s spice after prolonged exposure. Why?
Because she got bored of it.
The human mind is designed to sense changes in it’s environment. This is why people who work in a chocolate factory can’t even smell the chocolate.
This is why you can’t smell your own cooking in the kitchen after a few minutes.
And this is why using the same gimmicks and tactics over and over again in your emails is a dumb strategy in the long run. You end up losing the element of surprise you had in the first emails, when the emotional impact was still strong.
What happened here was the list got desensitised.
Over time your emails start feeling as boring the passages of Shakespeare ( who I doubt even existed ) as written by a drunk gorilla on an antique typewriter with a sticky “F” key.
And the last thing you want is a bored list.
Because bored lists are dead lists.
And last I checked you can’t pay the bills with a dead list.
