Once again I found myself in an epic manly adventure picking up my nephew ( handome little devil he is ).
Problem is, I was on time to pick him up.
A bit too on time. Because I showed up at the school gates along with all the other parents exploiting their lunch breaks to pick their kids up. And it was a disaster of a traffic jam.
A line of cars. As long as the eye could see was bottlenecked into a small road nobody could escape.
And the only exit was a turn into the school gate… with oncoming traffic.
And this oncoming traffic was also bottlenecked. Slogging down the same narrow road from the other side. Making the traffic slower than drying paint.
With cars from both directions wrestling at the gate to get in first.
Relying on my cunning wit, I took the long drive around the school avoiding all the traffic. And parking at the outside parking lot.
It was a slightly longer drive. But it shaved a good 15 minutes off what I could’ve done if I joined the line.
This kind of strategic thinking is key to surviving in the business jungle.
While everyone is busy zagging, you should zip!
It takes balls to break from the herd mentality and do something differently.
Whether it’s approaching a new angle in your copy. Or covering a new problem in your market. As humans we naturally follow where everyone is going.
The “zig” path isn’t always obvious. And may even “feel” wrong at times.
Till you try it, of course.
Enough of my old road stories.
