Last week I had one of my posts torn apart by one of the best email copywriters alive.
It was brutal I tell ya. I barely made it out in one peace!
She not only tore my copy apart. She also dowsed it in gasoline, set it on fire, shot it out of a canon, poured acid on it and fed it to the three headed dog guarding the gates of hell… with a side order of sardines. Yes, it was that brutal. I almost pissed my pants just thinking about what she was going to say about it.
Yet in the end I grew a pair and sat through the whole critique and learned two things from the onslaught.
1- I don’t suck as much as I thought I did. And my main problems are so simple they can be solved in a few days by beating the solution into my head and stabbing my wrists everytime I make a mistake.
And, more importantly…
There is always room for improvement.
Let me get this clear. I doesn’t matter how good you are in your field or how many experience points you’ve harvested in your years of practicing your trade. There’ll always be room to get better.
And no, you’re not excluded from this rule. Stop looking for a loophole, there isn’t one.
This rule alone is why even the greatest athletes in the world keep practising day in and day out until their legs are practically falling off from fatigue. This rule is why Samsung keeps making it’s phones as fast as possible every year without setting the battery on fire. This is why we hold the Olympics every four years ( and NO, it was never because horny teenage boys enjoyed the women’s gymnastics ).
And most importantly to you, this is why even the biggest direct marketing houses are always hunting for copy to beat their current controls.
They know how neglecting constant improvement is asking to become as obsolete as the dinosaurs.
So don’t ever forget that. There’s always room for improvement and you must always strive to keep learning and getting better.
Till the next wave of madness…
PS The festive season is coming up and I have no plans to not work during the holidays ( for me writing copy is about as much fun as getting a lapdance or playing videogames ). So do me a favour and hit me up if you need any copy ( landing pages, sales pages, emails ) for the new year. Just get your ass over at:
And let’s team up for the festive season.
Oh, and I can only take one client for this deal. Like I said, I enjoy working but even I need to play my ass off.
