Just saw a rather successful copywriter friend of mine on ye olde Facebook talking about how some of his “friends” unfriended him because of his success. Wow… talk about jealousy. Brings back something my mother said to me once up a time.
Two years ago I drove my her home from the hospital after she had some surgery done.
Being the notoriously slow driver I am I kept slowing down and moving to the side for other drivers to overtake me and this got on mom’s nerves. It’s one thing to be careful on the road yet it’s another thing to get on your knees and kiss the ass of whoever’s behind you on the road because you’re too much of a little bitch to claim your own slice of highway and drive like you have a pair.
Growing ever impatient, Mom said the following words to me:
James, if someone wants to overtake you, don’t slow down for them. They overtake you at your speed.
She then had me pull over and took the wheel from me before
driving rocketing the rest of the hour long journey with the pain from her surgery still burning in her side…yeah… mothers are tough indeed.
But not tough enough to tolerate my slow driving heh heh.
Moving on, take a look at what she said to me for a moment.
Let those words sink in. Beat them into your cranium with a frying pan if you have to. Especially the phrase where she said…
“They overtake you at your speed”
While mom was lecturing me about how I drive with the speed of a tortoise getting a piggyback ride from a snail she also gave me one of the most important life lessons ever. A lesson I shall impart unto you on the condition that you don’t just sit on this advice but you’ll take action on it.
Here goes… you see, in life when you’re going after what you want you’re going to make a lot of people uncomfortable. Whether it’s your friends, your family, your colleagues. Some of them won’t be able to stomach the thought of you becoming moar successful than them.
Just like the copywriter I mentioned above.
There will always be those who want you to remain on their level. Yet if you know what’s truly good for you, don’t heed their words. If they truly want to be on the same level as you they’ll work to catch up to you at your speed. Not theirs.
Till the next wave of madness…
PS- For great copy which’ll sell the crap out of your product ( while making the naysayers work harder to catch up to you ), hit me up over at:
