Wow… this is embarassing.
Had a call with one of client’s customers the other day and it turns out I butchered her name during our whole chat.
The customer was Chinese. In China the first two names are actually the whole first name. Then the surname stands on it’s own.
I had no idea that was how it worked.
Oh well… I’m an idiot….
At least I wasn’t being a totally disrespectful bastard. I know a thing or two about Asian cultures and if there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s the significant emphasis these cultures put on respect for others.
Try learning Japanese and you’ll be stumped just by how anal these guy are about changing how you talk depending on who you’re talking to.
It’s all a matter culture shock. If you never grew up exposed to Asian cultures it won’t be obvious to you. In fact… the stuff you take for granted in your own culture is not obvious to anyone on the outside.
All these different cultures have their own similarities regarding how they go about doing things. You can expect someone to have a name and a surname regardless where they come from. It’s one thing most cultures have in common.
Keep going deeper and the cultural differences will give you a bad case of PTSD via culture shock.
This kind of culture shock is extremely evident in email marketing as well.
Many of the principles of persuasion and direct response still apply in email. It’s still selling with the written word. The same marketing triggers that work in one scenario will still work in another. And you’re certainly guaranteed to kill the sale if you put a picture of a baboon in the middle of your ad for no apparent reason.
However that’s where the similarities end.
Email marketing is a whole different monster in it’s own way.
From the way the copy is consumed by the readers.
To the way you you have to battle it out with other competing messages in the medium. Coming to email marketing from another type of direct response is like stepping onto an alien planet where all the aliens have three legs and four eyes.
It’s similar… but confusing.
This is why a different approach in needed when you;re selling via email.
So many different factors to take into account.
Stuff that would DESTROY an email marketing campaign… even though it might work real well in a sales letter or a VSL…. or a love letter to that one person you keep stalking but they keep saying no.
