A couple of years back a friend of mine came up to me with a “revolutionary” new idea. Apparently he thought up of a “social network” for people who enjoy videogames. One where they could communicate, share high scores and compete worldwide.
Apparently he’d already started building the product when he came to see me.
There was already a prototype done and a long ass document detailing how the products was going to work.
He poured a month of his life into this project.
And all I could say to him, was, ” Dude, your product already exists in 4 different forms. In an extremely fierce market. What you’re doing isn’t feasible.”.
What I said went in one ear, and out the other apparently.
And it was another two weeks before he saw the light at the end of the tunnel and woke up from his delusional slumber and actually took a moment to research his market.
Boy oh boy I’ll never forget the call he gave me. He was all depressed, and couldn’t believe it was lights out for his project…
Can’t believe he didn’t notice it from step one.
It’s a big no-brainer to test the waters before diving into the pond!
Bottom line of the story?
Research your market first before creating your product. Find out if anyone else has done it, and if you don’t stand a prayer in that market…
And last but not least… don’t just create a solution and hope to find a problem for it. That would be like putting the cart before even knowing whether there’s a horse or not…. You’d be wasting your precious time. Especially if it turns out the product isn’t viable after investing all that time into it.
Enough of that.
